Queuing
Studies
Queuing
studies are performed at many locations, especially at at-grade
intersections and freeway ramps.
Traffic
queues form when the traffic demand on a facility exceeds it
capacity or the headway for the arriving vehicles is less than the
time it takes to pass. When queues exist, the resultant form is
delay, which is important measurement of road net's level of
service.
Here are two
examples of conducting
queuing
studies:
- Stop Sign Queue :
The JAMAR counter is used for this type of study. It is set for 1 minute intervals on regular TMC mode,
every time the box beeps a new interval record the number of vehicles in line.
Multiple lanes need to counted separately.
- Signalized Queue Study :
The JAMAR counter cannot be used for queuing study at signalized
intersections. Every time the Signal turns green for the
approach, we will record the time of signal change and record number of vehicles manually for each lane separately.
