Automatic counting provides the means of gathering large amount of traffic volume data at reasonable time and resources.

With the development of more advanced equipments, automatic counting can provide more than simple vehicle counts. Sophisticated vehicle classification counts are possible. Even turning movement counts are being recorded automatically at intersections using modern technologies.
