THE TRAFFIC GROUP AWARDED $1 MILLION IN CONTRACTS TO PROVIDE TRAFFIC DATA FOR HAWAII, GEORGIA AND ARKANSAS
BALTIMORE, October 10, 2003 - The Traffic Group, Inc., a Baltimore-area based traffic engineering and transportation planning consulting company with an international clientele, has been awarded more than $1 million in contracts by the states of Hawaii, Georgia and Arkansas to conduct traffic counting and data collection studies on their major highways. States use such studies for traffic planning purposes and to fulfill federal guidelines for the awarding of national highway funds.
The two-year Hawaii state contract, which calls for conducting 1,200 counts per year, totals $478,000. Georgia's contract is $400,000 for 3,500 counts statewide the first year, with an option for another $400,000 for the next year. The Arkansas state contract totals $180,000 over two years.
The announcement was made by Wes Guckert, president and CEO of Traffic Group, which has conducted such studies throughout the Maryland-Delaware-Virginia area, as well as in numerous other states. The company has also conducted similar traffic impact studies in such foreign countries as South Africa and Indonesia.
As part of the three contracts, which were awarded by each of the state's departments of transportation after open competitive bidding, The Traffic Group will monitor traffic flows on major highways to provide input for planning for future traffic growth and highway construction.
To conduct such studies, The Traffic Group uses specialized counting equipment to collect important traffic data, such as the type and frequency of vehicles using a particular roadway and at what times of day. The company presently has more than 1,000 pieces of traffic counting equipment, the largest inventory on the East Coast. During 2002, The Traffic Group conducted more than 17,000 traffic counts nationwide for the public sector, including various government agencies in Maryland, New York, Virginia and West Virginia. The company estimates it will conduct more than 20,000 traffic counts this year.
"With the continuing increase in traffic and the growing problem of traffic congestion and delays, the need for reliable and comprehensive data about the nature and scope of traffic is becoming increasingly important to the planning for and maintenance of our roadway system. We pride ourselves on the scope and reliability of our traffic counting process, which has provided invaluable traffic data for many state and local governments, as well as private and civic groups, for nearly 20 years," said Wes Guckert.
The Traffic Group, founded by Mr. Guckert in 1985, now has a staff of 80, many of whom have degrees in traffic engineering. The company provides a range of consulting and planning services for traffic and parking problems and issues. Its clients include municipalities, counties, and states, as well as international corporations, developers, and non-profit community improvement associations, hospitals, schools and religious institutions.
